Regions & AZs where your stuff physically is
IN 10 SECONDS
A Region is a geographic area (like us-east-1). An Availability Zone (AZ) is a distinct physical datacenter inside that region, connected via low-latency fibers.
GOTCHA AWS Availability Zones are randomized per account. Your us-east-1a datacenter might be physically different from another account's us-east-1a.
HOW REDUNDANCY ROUTING FLOWS
01 User query lands on the load balancer, which distributes traffic across three datacenters.
02 Replication database updates are synced across AZs to guarantee high availability.
03 Disaster event a physical fire cuts power to AZ-A.
04 Failover load balancer routes traffic away from AZ-A to AZ-B and AZ-C without downtime.
POKE IT YOURSELF
aws ec2 describe-availability-zones --region us-east-1 — list all availability zones in a region
